Description

25 and 26 Market Place are two houses that have been converted into a disused library. They date from the early 18th century, with some alterations made in the mid-19th century. The buildings are constructed of brick, with the ground floor painted, and feature a concrete tile roof along with two gable stacks and one side wall stack. There is a plinth and bands at each floor level, topped by a coped parapet with five blank panels and a single coped gable.

The structure is three storeys high and has a five-window range of glazing bar sashes, with the two on the left being partly reglazed. Above this, there are five similar sashes, two of which are blank. All windows have segmental heads. The central doorcase features a moulded segmental pediment supported by brackets, and there is a fielded six-panel door with an overlight. To the left of the doorcase are two plain sashes with segmental heads, while to the right is a 19th-century elliptical arched window flanked by single round-headed glazed doors, all fitted with 20th-century glazing. The left return has a 20th-century door that is topped with an 18th-century stone hood supported by scroll brackets.

The interior of number 25 is said to contain an 18th-century staircase with plain, fluted, and turned balusters, a cut string, and a moulded handrail.
