Description
The Midland Bank, located at No. 30 in Newark on Trent, is a bank building dating from around 1895. It is designed in the Baroque Revival style and features ashlar stonework and a flat roof. The building has a moulded plinth, a rusticated ground floor, and pilasters, along with cornices at the first floor and eaves, topped with a balustrade.
It stands two storeys high and has a symmetrical façade with two groups of three bays. A hexagonal corner tower is prominent, showcasing three 8-pane sash windows with friezes, a segmental pedimented Tuscan doorcase, and a lead dome that includes a round window and a finial.
The right side facing the Market Place has two pedimented 12-pane sash windows, with two round-headed recesses below them that contain 20th-century windows, separated by paired columns and featuring railings and bracket keystones. The left side, facing Bridge Street, mirrors this design with three windows, and on the ground floor, it has single round windows with scrolled surrounds and monograms. Below the left round window is a 20th-century door with an overlight, while the right round window has a small blank window beneath it.
Inside, the banking hall is adorned with wooden panelling and plaster panels above the cornice. The ceiling features an enriched cross beam design with scroll brackets and drops, complemented by classical style panelled counters and screens.
