Description
The former Burton's Tailors is a shop located at 52 Coney Street in York, built in 1931 and refitted in 1993. Designed by Harry Wilson for Burton's, this building features reinforced concrete and faience, with a metal framed shopfront and windows, and a concrete and asphalt roof.
The exterior is three stories high with a three-and-a-half bay front, chamfered on the corner site. The entrance is through glass double doors, which are recessed in the corner bay, flanked by plate glass shop windows with wide fascias and moulded cornices. On the right end of the Market Street front, there are deeply recessed double doors with abstracted linenfold panelling. The upper floors are highlighted by plain pilaster strips that support a moulded frieze and cornice beneath a plain parapet. The three full bays are divided by two-storey tripartite windows, which are accented by Art Deco style fluted half columns with chevron moulded capitals and moulded spandrels above the outer lights. The windows are margin glazed with flat glazing strips and are separated at the second floor level by a chevron moulded band. The half-bay at the left end of the Coney Street front contains a single-light window. A dated foundation stone is located at the left end of the Coney Street front.
The interior has not been inspected.
