Description
4 and 6 Market Street are two houses that have been combined into one shop. They date from the mid-19th century and have undergone some later alterations, including 20th-century shopfronts. The buildings are constructed of painted brick in Flemish bond, with timber guttering and a brick stack; the roof is not visible.
The exterior features a four-storey, two-bay front for No. 4 and a three-storey, one-bay front for No. 6. The 20th-century shopfront includes pilasters and a moulded cornice, with two-light shop windows for both buildings. There are recessed glazed double doors towards the left end of No. 4, with a one-light window to the left.
No. 4 has 12-pane sash windows on the first and second floors, and two unequal 9-pane sashes on the third floor, all with painted sills and flat arches made of gauged brick. No. 6 features a 4-pane sash window with a flat arch on the first floor and a 12-pane sash on the second floor, with the head obscured by an eaves frieze. Both houses have boxed guttering supported by shaped brackets and cast-iron inverted bell rainwater heads. The interior has not been inspected.
