Description

Boots The Chemist is a shop located at 48 Coney Street in York, dating from 1907, with some alterations made in the late 20th century. Designed by MV Treleaven for Boots, Chemists, the building features a half-timbered and plastered front, with barge-boarded gables and a slate roof.

The exterior consists of three storeys and an attic, with a two-bay front. The second and attic floors are jettied, supported by corbelheads. The ground floor has a renewed shopfront. On the first floor, there are two 5-light mullioned and transomed windows beneath a continuous moulded string, adorned with carved badges and horned masks. The second floor features 5-light mullioned windows that project over coved pargeted jetties, decorated with vine trails and grape motifs. The attic on the left has a 2-light casement window above an embattled tie beam, while the right attic has a 5-light window beneath an embattled tie enriched with foliate carving. All windows are fitted with diamond leaded lights, some featuring heraldic panels of coloured glass. Moulded plaster medallions and heraldic shields display the date, the arms of the City of York, and the Keys of St Peter. An octagonal clock and the 'BOOTS' sign are suspended from an ornate angular bracket on the second floor. The interior has not been inspected.
