Description
35 and 37 Coney Street is a pair of houses with shops, currently used as shops and a restaurant. They were built in the mid-19th century, with later alterations and extensions in the 19th and 20th centuries, including changes to the shopfronts. The buildings have a stucco front featuring a moulded cornice beneath a partly balustraded parapet that conceals a slate mansard roof with a rendered brick stack. The extension is made of red brick in Flemish bond and has a first-floor display window framed in cast iron, with buff faience dressings and a slate roof.
The exterior is four stories high and has a three-window front, with a three-story, one-bay extension to the left. The first-floor windows of No. 35 are two- and three-light, four-pane casements set beneath pediments on acanthus consoles. The first-floor window of No. 37, which continues over the extension, features three pairs of large-pane casements beneath divided overlights and cambered transoms with foliate spandrels, as well as a broad fascia and cornice. The original second-floor windows are four- and twelve-pane sashes with lugged architraves; those in No. 37 have been shortened due to alterations below. On the third floor, the windows are inset squat nine-pane sashes with cambered heads and moulded bracketed sills that continue as a sill band. The second floor of the extension has a two-light large-pane casement window with a louvred overlight, framed by moulded foliate panels and squat rusticated Composite pilasters. Above this, there is a moulded cornice over a Greek key frieze that steps up over the window to a scrolled pediment, which is broken by a triple-feather finial. The interior has not been inspected.
