Description

This is a mid-19th century shop, modernised in the 20th century. It is located on Coney Street in York. The building is constructed of pink and grey mottled brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a timber shopfront and eaves cornice. The roof is slate, hipped at the rear, and features brick stacks.

The front of the shop has three gabled bays and three windows, with pilaster strips framing the facade. The shopfront features sunk panel pilasters supporting a plain frieze and dentilled cornice, which rests on paired scrolled brackets. It has double glazed doors flanked by plate glass windows. The first and second floors have unequal six-pane sash windows, with a larger cross window in the centre of the first floor. The attic windows are squat four-pane sashes. First floor and attic windows have painted stone sills, with a sill band on the second floor. All windows have flat arches, although those in the attic are largely obscured by the moulded eaves cornice, which is supported by grooved, bulbous brackets.

At the rear, on the second floor, unequal nine-pane sashes with painted sills flank a blocked central window. The third floor has three sash windows: two twelve-pane windows and one sixteen-pane window. All visible windows are set within flat brick arches. The interior was not inspected.

The building is included on the list for its group value alongside other buildings in Coney Street.
