Description

5 and 7 Nessgate are two houses that have been combined into one shop. Number 7 dates from the mid-19th century and was altered in the late 19th century when it was joined with Number 5. Number 5 is constructed of cream-grey brick in a variation of Flemish stretcher bond and features a timber shopfront and a first-floor bay window. It has a brick corbel cornice beneath a slate roof. Number 7 is made of orange-brown brick in English garden wall bond and has a timber modillion cornice also beneath a slate roof.

The exterior displays a three-storey, three-window front for Number 5 and a three-storey, one-window front for Number 7, which is canted at the corner. The shopfront runs across both buildings, featuring panelled pilasters below a coved dentilled cornice supported by grooved brackets. The doors are half-glazed and panelled, while the windows consist of plate glass above panelled risers. Number 5 has a three-light canted bay window on the first floor with a moulded dentilled cornice and segment-headed one-pane sashes. The second-floor windows are similar sashes, all with painted stone sills and segmental brick arches. The entrance to Number 5 is a shop door located on the canted corner. The windows facing Nessgate are four-pane sashes on both floors, while those on Coppergate include a one-pane sash on the first floor and a six-pane sash on the second floor, all with painted sills and one-course cambered brick arches. The interior has not been inspected.
