Description
No. 43 Shambles is a house that has been converted into a shop and offices. It dates from the late 18th century and was remodeled in the 20th century. The building is constructed of orange-buff brick in Flemish bond, featuring timber modillioned guttering and a hipped pantile roof.
The exterior has three stories with a three-window front. The entrance includes a margin-glazed and panelled door with an overlight, flanked by small-pane canted bay windows, all beneath a continuous moulded cornice. The first floor windows are 12-pane sashes set above a painted stone sill band, while the second floor has squat 6-pane sashes, with the center window blocked, and painted stone sills. All windows feature flat arches made of orange rubbed brick. A fluted inverted bell rainwater head, initialled PA SP TY and dated 1775, is also present.
On the left side, there is a tripartite small-pane shop window beneath a keyed flat arch. A blocked first floor window with a flat arch is located above a sill band that returns from the front, and there is a replacement 6-pane window with a sill and arch on the second floor. The interior has not been inspected.
