Description
12 and 12A Shambles is a house that has been converted into a shop and offices. It dates from the late 15th century, with a later extension, and was refronted in the early 19th century. The building underwent renovations in the 20th century, including the addition of a shopfront. It features a timber frame, fronted with brown-cream mottled brick laid in stretcher bond, accented with orange brick dressings. The eaves cornice is made of timber with moulded modillions, and the roof is hipped with pantiles, featuring corner scrolls and brick stacks.
The exterior has a three-storey, two-window front. To the left is a boarded shop door next to a four-light small-pane window with an external counter. On the right end, there is a six-panel passage door, and all openings are sheltered beneath a boarded canopy. The first and second-floor windows are 12-pane sashes with narrow painted sills and flat arches made of gauged brick. A three-course raised brick band is present on the second floor.
Inside, the timber frame is exposed, with beams and joists visible on all floors. An original door lintel with a four-centred arch can be found at the rear of the ground floor passage.
