Description

The Shrine of St Margaret Clitherow is a house that has been converted into a religious shrine. It dates from the late 14th century, with a late 15th-century extension at the front, and it underwent significant restoration in 1954. The building is timber-framed, with the ground floor rebuilt in variegated brick using Flemish bond, while the upper storeys are rendered. It features pantile roofs and a brick stack.

The exterior consists of two storeys and an attic, with a one-bay gabled front that has a jettied first floor. There is a 20th-century board door in a plain surround with a canopy hood supported by carved brackets, located to the left of a segmental 4-light bow window with a moulded cornice. On the first floor, there are two 2-light casement windows, and in the attic, there is a squat 6-pane fixed light. The rear of the building has three storeys and three unequal bays, showcasing exposed timber-framing. Each floor has inserted 1-light windows, and there is a 3-light oriel window on the first floor. All windows feature square leaded lights. The right return of the hall block displays an exposed crown post truss in the gable end.

The interior is noted for its timber-framing and crown post roof, as recorded by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England. It is important to note that the association of this house with St Margaret Clitherow is incorrect, as it is not related to Nos 10-11.
