Description
No. 19 Shambles is a house that has been converted into a shop. The front block likely dates from the early 16th century but was refronted, and a rear extension was added in the early 18th century. There were alterations in the 19th century and renovations in the 20th century, including the shopfront. The front block is timber-framed and refronted in buff-orange brick laid in Flemish bond, with dressings of orange brick, while the rear is in random bond. It features a brick stack and a pantile roof.
The exterior is three stories high with a three-window front. The shopfront includes small-pane glazed doors on either side of a similarly glazed shop window. The first and second floor windows are 12-pane sashes, with the first-floor windows being taller, and they have painted sills and flat arches made of gauged brick. There are raised brick bands above both floors and above the second-floor windows. The rear of the building has three stories and an attic, with a three-window gable wall; the ground floor is obscured by a later extension. The first and second floors have 12-pane sash windows with segmental brick arches, while the attic window is an unequal 9-pane sash, and there are raised brick bands.
On the left return, some timber-framing is exposed on the second floor above the adjacent building. Inside, the ground floor front room retains some exposed timber-framing and remnants of a corbelled-out brick chimney hood. A light well, now converted to an office, still has window openings in moulded brick surrounds. The rear room features ogee-stopped quarter round moulded beams and joists.
