Description

No. 21 Shambles is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the early 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century, including the shopfront. The building is constructed of orange-buff brick, laid in Flemish bond at the front and random bond at the rear. It features a moulded stone cornice at the front, which supports a pantile roof with a brick chimney stack.

The exterior has three storeys and a one-window front. The shopfront includes a full-width moulded cornice above a two-panel door with an overlight, and a large-pane sash window above a panelled riser. On the upper floors, there is one 16-pane sash window on the first floor and two 8-pane sash windows on the second floor, all equipped with painted stone sills and flat arches made of gauged brick. The first-floor window has 20th-century louvred shutters. A painted stone band runs along the first floor level.

At the rear, the building also has three storeys and an attic, with a one-window gable wall. The ground and first floors are not visible, but the second floor features a 20-pane sash window beneath an elliptical brick arch, along with a small replacement window beneath a similar arch in the attic.

The interior has not been inspected, but records indicate that it originally contained a staircase with three flights, turned balusters, rectangular newels, and a moulded handrail.
