Description
This is a row of three houses, now functioning as three shops, located on the Shambles in York. They date back to the early 15th century but were altered in the late 19th century and partly rebuilt and renovated around 1960. The buildings are timber-framed with white-washed plaster at the front, while the rear is rebuilt in variegated brick arranged in random bond, topped with pantile roofs.
The exterior features a two-storey, three-bay front. There is a through-passage entrance with a chamfered four-centred lintel between Nos. 31 and 32. No. 31 has a small-pane shop window above a sunk panel riser, positioned to the left of a part-glazed four-panel door with an overlight, all beneath a boxed first-floor jetty supported by carved brackets. The first-floor window is a horizontal sliding sash with 12-pane and 9-pane lights. No. 32 has a similar shopfront featuring a six-light half-canted window with a transom to the left of a recessed glazed door. Its first-floor windows are tripled unequal 9-pane sashes set within raised architraves. Above the shopfronts of Nos. 31 and 32, there is a plain fascia board with hanging brackets. No. 33 has a six-panel door to the right of a three-light small-pane shop window with transoms, all beneath a boxed overhang on carved brackets. Its first-floor window consists of grouped one-pane sashes within a raised architrave, and above the shopfront, a hanging bar on brackets remains. The eaves cornice is moulded and bracketed. At the rear, some timber-framing is visible at No. 31. The interiors have not been inspected, but records indicate fragments of timber framing are present.
