Description
No. 50 Goodramgate is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the late 19th century and has undergone some alterations in the 20th century, including the shopfront. The building features a front made of red brick in Flemish stretcher bond, with an orange brick left return in English garden-wall bond. It has black brick bands and painted stone dressings, along with a slate roof that includes brick stacks and a single gabled dormer with a 4-pane sash window and shaped, pierced bargeboards.
The exterior consists of three storeys and an attic, with a two-window front. The shopfront is arcaded with a central door. The first-floor windows are 4-pane sashes with rounded heads, set beneath round brick arches that have inserted voussoirs decorated with rosettes, and hoodmoulds that return to form an impost band. The second-floor windows are also 4-pane sashes, located beneath flat arches made of gauged brick, featuring moulded keyblocks and an impost band of cogged and black brick. The first-floor windows have a moulded sill band, while the second-floor windows have painted stone sills supported by moulded brackets over cogged brick courses, with the sills extended to create a sill band. A dentilled brick corbel cornice finishes the top of the building.
Inside, there is an open string staircase with turned balusters, a newel post topped with a ball finial, and a mahogany handrail that rises from the first floor to the attic. Several fireplaces remain on the first and second floors, and some original features such as dado rails, cornices, and ceiling roses may still be present.
