Description
77 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the 17th century, with a facade likely added around 1750, and has had additions made in 1796 along with later alterations, including ground floor shop fronts from the 1980s. The building is probably timber-framed but has been rebuilt in pinkish-brown brick laid in Flemish bond, featuring flat arches of colourwashed red brick, and it has a plain tile roof. It stands four storeys high and has two first-floor windows. The first and second floors have 6/6 sash windows, while the third floor has 3/3 sash windows, all set in near flush frames with sills. The ground floor features a glazed shop front and a glazed entrance.
Inside, there are four visible 17th-century roof trusses with double purlins; the centre truss is closed, while the others have interrupted tie-beams. The south truss shows peg holes for five studs, indicating the building's original timber-framed construction. There are also signs of timber-framing on the third floor, and a mid-18th-century staircase is present.
Historically, the rear range of the building was added in 1796 when it was owned by a pastry cook.
