Description
79 and 80 High Street are two houses that have been converted into shops. They were likely built in the early 19th century and have undergone some alterations, including changes to the ground floor around the 1980s. The buildings are constructed of orange-red brick in Flemish bond, featuring flat arches made of gauged brick, with ashlar sills, a sill band, a frieze, a cornice, and copings. The parapet is made of stucco, and the roof is covered with plain tiles. The left end and party-wall tacks are made of brick, with oversailing courses and pots.
The buildings stand three storeys tall and have two first-floor windows. The first and second floors feature 8/8 sash windows, all set in plain reveals with flat arches. The first floor has a continuous sill band, while the other sills are separate. There is a frieze and an ovolo-moulded cornice, and a low, coped parapet crowns the structure.
Inside, the ground floor has been gutted, but both properties still have open-well winder staircases with stick balusters on the upper floors. The right-hand building, No. 79, retains a moulded plaster cornice in the front first-floor room.
