Description
No. 7 Ship Street is a terraced house that has been converted into a club. It dates from the early 19th century and features brickwork laid in Flemish bond, with mathematical tiles on the bays, all of which are now painted. The roof is obscured by a parapet.
The building stands three storeys above a basement and has dormers, with a three-window range and a double-fronted design. There are steps leading up to a central entrance that has an elliptical arch, overlight, and panelled reveals. This entrance is framed by a doorcase with engaged Roman Doric columns and an entablature that includes a triglyph frieze, topped with an open segmental pediment featuring modillions. To the left of the entrance is a passage.
On either side of the entrance, there are two-storey segmental bays with tripartite windows. The modillion cornice has been renewed, and the semi-dome and sashes are of the original design, though presumably renewed. The central flat-arched window is set under a gauged brick head, with a sash of original design on the first floor. The second floor features paired windows over the bays and a flat-arched central window, with frames and sashes on this floor all renewed. The parapet is adorned with urns at either end. At the rear, there is a function room with an octagonal domed ceiling, but it contains no fittings of special interest.
