Description
No. 14A Ship Street is a mid-19th century terraced house located in Brighton. The building is finished in stucco and has a roof that is obscured by a parapet.
The exterior features three storeys and a three-window range. The ground floor is stepped forward and has a shallow, corbel-like moulding at the springing level of the openings. The entrance consists of a segmental-arched doorway with a fanlight and a panelled door that retains its original design, set deeply back under a segmental arch with an elaborate wave-moulding. To the right of the entrance are two segmental-arched windows of the same design, each with panels below the sills.
A cornice, which has a console at the right-hand end, wraps around the corbelling of the oriel window, which features two layers of wave mouldings. The centre of the upper floors is slightly recessed and then projects forward as a canted bay. This bay has a moulded sill band on consoles with panels below, and a tripartite window with pilasters and quadrant corners. There is one flat-arched window to the left, while the right-hand bay is blank. An elaborate cast-iron window guard adorns the first-floor bay window. The entablature has a panelled frieze between consoles. The second floor follows a similar design but has lower proportions and a flat-arched window in the right-hand bay. The building also features eaves gutters and side stacks. The interior has not been inspected.
