Description

Number 76A is a mid-19th century terraced house on Marine Parade in Brighton. It is constructed of stucco and has a roof hidden by a blocking course.

The exterior is four storeys and an attic, over a basement, and features a three-window range. The entire façade is a full-height, nearly full-width canted bay. The right-hand ground-floor segment is set back to accommodate a flat-arched entrance with an overlight, contained within a prostyle porch of Tuscan pilasters and an entablature decorated with laurel garlands and a modillioned cornice. The ground floor has banded, chamfered rustication, with lintels to the flat-arched windows treated as voussoirs with keystones. Each first-floor window has a balcony with a cast-iron railing and brackets. The windows have architraves and entablatures, the cornice of which is supported by console brackets, with three rosettes on the frieze of each. Storey bands are visible between the first and second, and second and third floors. The second-floor windows also have architraves. The cornice to the third floor is decorated with dentil blocks, an ovolo treated as a bead and reel, and modillions and returns around the left and right corners. A simpler cornice marks the attic, with short returns. Chimney stacks are located on the party walls. The interior has not been inspected. Railings are present to the stairs and area. The property forms a group with numbers 68, 69, and 73-89 Marine Parade, and numbers 1-14 Royal Crescent.
