Description

Numbers 73 and 74 Marine Parade are a pair of terraced houses dating from around 1825, likely designed by Amon Wilds and Charles Augustin Busby. They are constructed of stucco, with a roof hidden behind a parapet. Number 73 has four storeys over a basement, while Number 74 has three storeys and an attic over a basement. Number 73 has a four-window front, and Number 74 a three-window front. The right return of Number 74 steps down to two storeys at the rear.

The entrance to Number 73 is a flat-arched doorway with an overlight, set beneath a prostyle porch of Tuscan pilasters, an entablature, and a blocking course. To the right is a full-height segmental bay of three windows, all with flat arches and entablatures. The ground floor of Number 73 features banded, chamfered rustication. A balcony with cast-iron railing and brackets is present on the first floor of this bay. Storey bands are located between the first and second floors. The ground floor of Number 74 also has banded, chamfered rustication, but on a bolder scale than that of Number 73. The main elevation of Number 74 is treated as a full-height, nearly full-width segmental bay; all windows are flat arched. A balcony with cast-iron railings and brackets to the first floor is styled as an arcade supported by colossal Tuscan pilasters rising through the first and second storeys, and topped by a cornice. The ground floor has an entablature and parapet to the attic storey. An altered flat-arched entry is on the return elevation, framed by Tuscan pilasters and an entablature. The return elevation of Number 74 has banded, chamfered rustication to the ground floor and flat-arched windows with a cornice band separating the second floor from the attic. The interior was not inspected during listing.

Iron railings are present to stairs and areas. Numbers 73 and 74, together with numbers 68, 69, and 73 to 89 Marine Parade, form a group with numbers 1 to 14 Royal Crescent. Number 73 was originally listed on 20 August 1971.
