Description

Number 76 is a terraced house, now functioning as the Brighton British Legion Club, built around 1840. It may have been designed by Sir Charles Barry. The building is finished in stucco and has a slate roof.

The exterior features three storeys with a dormer above a basement. It has a three-window range and a flat-arched entry with an overlight, framed by Tuscan pilasters and an entablature. To the left, there is a single-storey canted bay with three windows, each also framed by Tuscan pilasters, and the entablature continues from the entry. The ground floor, including the bay and entry, is elevated above street level on a terrace created from a wide basement area. This terrace has a parapet wall with pointed slits and steps down towards the street, ending in large console brackets. The terrace is supported at the basement level by four engaged and fluted Doric columns, each topped with an entablature block and a stele-like finial. Access to the basement area is provided by French doors. Most openings are flat-arched, with many featuring original sash windows. The top of the bay serves as a porch, with a balustrade that has a pierced design forming a small arcade. First-floor openings are set in round-arched recesses, linked by a springing band to create a shallow arcade. The second floor has an entablature topped by a roof parapet, with balustraded sections above each window range. There is one flat-arched dormer on the roof, and stacks are located on the party wall.

The interior has not been inspected. Number 76 is part of a group with Nos 68, 69, and 73-89 Marine Parade, as well as Nos 1-14 Royal Crescent.
