Description

Numbers 68 and 69 Marine Parade are early 19th-century terraced houses of stucco construction. The roofs are hidden behind parapets. The exteriors are four stories high over a basement, with three windows on each elevation. The right return of number 69 has a three-window range. Each elevation is treated as a full-height, nearly full-width segmental bay, featuring flat-arched windows. The second-floor windows have a cornice supported by console brackets, and all windows in number 69 have architraves. The facades have an entablature and a parapet. The ground floor of number 68 is scored to imitate ashlar, while that of number 69 is treated as banded, chamfered rustication, with alternate bands vermiculated. A recently rebuilt verandah with cast-iron rails and brackets is present at number 68; a first-floor balcony with cast-iron railings and thick, stucco-covered brackets is found at number 69. These brackets are decorated with guilloche and acanthus on the intrados, and flowers on the spandrels. The entry to number 68 has a round-arched decorative fanlight, set under a prostyle porch of thin, fluted Tuscan columns and pilasters. The entry to number 69, on the right return, also has a round-arched fanlight, under a Doric prostyle porch and entablature with a blocking course. The frieze is decorated with a Greek key pattern. All windows on the return elevation have architraves, with those on the first and second floors supported by console brackets. Cast-iron balconettes are present on the second-floor windows of number 69. Railings are to the stairs and area. The interior was not inspected. Numbers 68 and 69 form a group with numbers 73 to 89 and with numbers 1 to 14 Royal Crescent.
