Description
Numbers 17 and 18 are a pair of terraced houses dating from circa 1826, located on the east side of Bedford Street, Brighton. Number 17 was likely designed by Amon Wilds and Charles Augustus Busby. Number 18 is rendered in stucco, while Number 17 is built of brick in a Flemish bond pattern. The roofs are hidden behind parapets.
The houses are four storeys high, with a basement level. Number 17 has a two-window front, while Number 18 has a one-window front. Steps lead to a round-arched entry with a fanlight. Number 18 features an entry porch with a gabled roof, styled as a pediment with a raking cornice, supported by brackets and an entablature. The original design doors remain. To the right of the entry on Number 18 is a full-height segmental bay with tripartite, flat-arched windows, some of which retain their original sashes. Blocked camber-arched windows are located above the entry of Number 17. A cast-iron window guard protects the first-floor windows of the bay on Number 17, and a brick dentil cornice is also present. Stacks are visible on the party wall between the two houses. The interiors have not been inspected. Original railings are present to the stairs and areas.
