Description

The stables, located on the south side of Bristol Road in Brighton, date from the early 19th century. They are constructed of pebbles in pitch with brick dressings and feature shallow pitched roofs of tile that run parallel to the long axis of each section. The building has a U-shaped plan and is two storeys high with scattered windows.

The elevation facing No. 29 along Bristol Road includes a later shopfront. The courtyard elevation of No. 29 features four camber-arched entrances and one round-arched window, with the remaining windows being camber arched, some of which are blocked. The middle range, situated to the south of the courtyard, is partly obscured by later additions. The eastern range is mostly hidden by a later outbuilding that lacks distinction but exhibits a similar variety of openings as the western range.

This structure is noted as a very rare surviving example of an early 19th-century livery stables building and holds group value within its context.
