Description

These are a group of four terraced houses, dating from circa 1855, located on Montpelier Crescent in Brighton. The houses are constructed of stucco, with a roof hidden by a parapet.

The properties are four stories high and have a basement level, arranged in a three-window range. The terrace follows a convex curve in plan; numbers 34 to 37 are identical in design, while number 38 projects slightly forward, terminating the terrace with a full-height, almost full-width segmental bay window. Quoins are present on the first, second, and third floors of numbers 34, 37 and the southern edge of number 34. The ground floor is decorated with chamfered rustication. Numbers 34 to 37 each feature a flat-arched entrance with an overlight, framed by pilasters and an entablature. All windows are flat-arched; the first floor windows have architraves with alternating triangular and segmental pediments. A bracketed first-floor balcony with piers and cast-iron panels is also present. The second-floor windows have architraves, a modillion cornice, and an attic storey. Further details include a secondary cornice, a blocking course, and stacks to the party walls. The return side to Dyke Road on number 38 is distinguished by a porch with pilasters and a wreathed cornice, now enlarged to two storeys with steps leading to the first-floor entrance. A two-storey canted bay window is located to the left of the porch; all windows there are flat-arched and without mouldings, with the cornices carried around.

The interior has not been inspected.
