Description

Numbers 1, 2, and 3 Montpelier Crescent are a group of terraced houses dating from around 1855. They are constructed of stucco, with the roof hidden by a parapet.

The houses are three storeys high, with a basement, and feature a three-window front. The group forms a shallow, convex curve, with the outer bays of numbers 1 and 3 set back slightly. The ground floor is decorated with chamfered rustication. A flat-arched porch has pilasters and an entablature, and the entrances to numbers 1 and 3 are recessed. The overlights and panelled doors retain their original design.

All windows are flat-arched. The first-floor windows of numbers 1 and 3 have segmental pediments above the two inner windows; the outer window of number 1 has a balustrade below the sill, while that of number 3 retains its moulded stucco architrave and cornice. The first-floor windows of number 2 have a pediment over the centre window and cornices to the outer windows. Bracketed balconies with cast-iron railings are present on all but the outer windows of numbers 1 and 3. The second-floor windows have no architrave and retain their original six-pane sashes. A modillion cornice runs along the top, followed by a parapet, with stacks to the party walls.

The return elevation to number 1, facing Clifton Hill, is four windows wide. It features chamfered rustication to the ground floor, a flat-arched entrance, and a shallow, segmental three-storey bay of two-window range to the east. The first-floor windows have moulded stucco architraves and cornices, with the westernmost window blank. The second-floor windows also have moulded stucco architraves, the westernmost of which is blank. A modillion cornice and parapet continue from Montpelier Crescent.

The interior of the properties has not been inspected.

A set of square, stuccoed, corniced gate piers, partially altered, and cast-iron railings run between them.
