Description

The wall on the east and south sides of Brighton and Hove High School for Girls, known as The Temple, was built in 1819 for Thomas Read Kemp. It stretches approximately 80 meters along Denmark Terrace and about 50 meters in Temple Gardens. The construction features red and yellow brick set in English bond, knapped flints, cobbles, and stucco. In Temple Gardens, the wall includes a layer of knapped flint, followed by three courses of red brick, and cobbles set in mortar within panels of yellow brick, topped with a cement coping. The design in Denmark Terrace is similar but lacks the bottom layer of flint. At each end of the wall in Temple Gardens, there are round domed piers with stucco cornices. In Denmark Terrace, two entrances are flanked by pairs of square piers that match the wall's detailing, featuring stucco cornices and antefixae, some adorned with lion heads. One entrance is also present in Temple Gardens, along with an additional square pier forming another entrance next to the western round pier. A plaque near the south gate in Denmark Terrace commemorates Thomas Read Kemp. The wall has undergone significant renewal.
