Description

Semi-detached houses dating to c1845, constructed of stucco with a slate roof. They are located on Montpelier Villas, with one house having a 2-window front and the other a 3-window front to the return. Each house is wider towards the back, with the entrance positioned in the resulting angle, and the front and back portions are covered by separate roofs.

The front of the houses features ground-floor decoration with banded rustication and first-floor long and short quoins. A flat-arched entrance has pilasters and consoles supporting a first-floor balcony with a scalloped balustrade which is missing from No.13. Above the entrance is an overlight. There is a segmental bay to the basement and ground floor fronting the street, with flat-arched triple windows, and a shallow dome above the storey band. Basement windows have 6/6 sash windows of original design. Bracketed balconies are present to the ground-floor windows, featuring cast-iron railings and a fringed canopy, though the fringe is missing from No.13. First-floor windows are flat-arched with margin lights; the westernmost first-floor window on the return is blank.

The back of the houses has a full-height segmental bay with tripartite windows. The first-floor windows have 6/6 sashes of original design. Eaves are supported by console brackets with paterae in the frieze. The roof is hipped with stacks to both the front and back parts. The interior was not inspected.

Cast-iron railings are present to the entrance steps and front gardens and have brackets. Square, stuccoed, corniced piers are located between each pair of houses on Montpelier Villas. The 20 houses that comprise Montpelier Villas are of uniform design, and such semi-detached houses are rare in Brighton. The railings, which were listed on 20.8.71, form part of the group value.
