Description

Semi-detached houses, built around 1845. They are located on Montpelier Villas, with a three-window return front. The houses are constructed of stucco with slate roofing.

Each house is wider towards the rear, with the entrance positioned in the angle formed between the front and back sections, each section having its own roof. The front of the houses features banded rustication on the ground floor and long and short quoins on the first floor. Steps lead to a flat-arched entrance, which has pilasters and consoles supporting a first-floor balcony with a scalloped balustrade and overlight. A segmental bay with flat-arched triple windows extends from the street front, terminating in a shallow dome above the storey band. Basement windows have 6/6 sash windows of an original design. Bracketed balconies are present beneath the ground-floor windows, featuring cast-iron railings and a fringed canopy (the fringe is missing from Number 10). Flat-arched first-floor windows feature blind boxes, with one first-floor window blank on the return front.

The rear section of each house has a full-height segmental bay with tripartite windows. Basement windows have 6/6 sashes, and the first-floor sashes have margin lights. The eaves are supported by console brackets with paterae in the frieze, and the roof is hipped with stacks to the front and back sections.

The interiors have not been inspected. Cast-iron railings are present to the entrance steps and front gardens, with brackets. A square, stuccoed, and corniced pier is located between Numbers 8 and 9. Montpelier Villas consists of twenty houses of uniform design, and such semi-detached houses are uncommon in Brighton.

The front garden railings were listed separately on August 20, 1971.
