Description

Number 10 is a terraced house located on Madeira Place in Brighton, built in the mid to late 19th century. The building is constructed of stucco and has a roof that is obscured by a blocking course. It stands four storeys high over a basement and features one window range in an Italianate style.

The entrance is accessed by stairs leading up to a flat-arched doorway with an overlight. The ground floor showcases banded, chamfered rustication. To the right of the entrance, there is a full-height canted bay with tripartite windows. All windows are flat-arched, with original design 2 x 2 sashes on the second and third floors. The bay windows have continuous moulded sill bands supported by pairs of fluted brackets, and each floor of the bay is adorned with cast-iron flower guards, except for the first floor, which has a balcony enclosed by a cast-iron railing and supported by cast-iron brackets.

The building features quoin strips at the party walls that extend from the first floor to the entablature at the top. These strips are intersected by egg-and-dart storey bands between the first and second floors and by a frieze of swags and square flowers between the second and third floors. A full entablature with a dentil cornice crowns the structure. The property also includes railings for the stairs and area, as well as stacks at the party walls. The interior has not been inspected.
