Description

Number 8 is a terraced house located on Old Steine in Brighton, built in 1786 and refronted in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of stucco, with a roof that is obscured by a parapet. It has five storeys over a basement and features a three-window range. The ground floor is decorated with chamfered rustication.

The round-arched entrance is framed by engaged Doric columns that support an entablature and an open pediment with a dentil cornice. The entrance includes panelled reveals, a fanlight, and a panelled door that is of original design. All windows are flat-arched, with a storey band above the ground floor and a moulded storey band between the second and third floors. There is a cornice above the third and fourth floors, and the windows on the second and third floors have moulded architraves and bracketed sills. A secondary cornice is present above the fourth floor, along with a blocking course and a stack on the party wall.

Cast-iron railings lead to the steps and area. It is likely that the fourth floor of the house has been added. The interior has not been inspected.
