Description
The Egyptian Campaign Memorial is a war memorial built in 1888 by the Royal Sussex Regiment to commemorate those who died in the Egyptian campaign of 1882 and the Nile expedition of 1884-5. It stands on the Old Steine in Brighton and is constructed of marble and polished granite. The memorial takes the form of an obelisk set upon a square base with a square plinth. The plinth has chamfered corners, and its faces carry inscriptions within panels of polished granite. A cornice featuring pediments and antefixae sits above the plinth, leading to the obelisk itself.
