Description

Number 3 is a terraced house built in 1790, located on the north side of Old Steine in Brighton. The building features tarred cobbles with painted brick dressings and has a roof that is obscured by a parapet. It stands three storeys high over a half-basement and has a three-window range. There are steps leading up to a flat-arched entrance, which is framed by engaged Doric columns and an entablature with a dentil cornice. The entrance includes an overlight and a panelled door of original design. The left side has brick quoins, and all windows have cambered arches with brick dressings that resemble quoins on the sides. The glazing has been altered to casements with leaded toplights, and the building has a parapet and a side stack.

The interior has not been inspected, but there are cast-iron railings leading to the steps and area. Historically, this house, along with its neighbor No. 4, was part of a group known as 'The Blue and Buffs' because they were painted in those Whig colors to please the Prince of Wales. Nos 1 and 2 were demolished for road widening in 1928.
