BRIGHTON OLD STEINE (North side) No.3 and attached railings

GV II Terraced house. 1790. Tarred cobbles with painted brick dressings, roof obscured by parapet. 3 storeys over half-basement, 3-window range. Steps up to flat-arched entrance framed by engaged Doric columns and entablature with dentil cornice; overlight; panelled door of original design; brick quoins to left side; all windows have cambered arches with brick dressings, which are in the form of quoins to the sides, and glazing altered to casements with leaded toplights; parapet; side stack.

INTERIOR: not inspected. Cast-iron railings to steps and area.

HISTORICAL NOTE: this house, and its neighbour No.4 (qv) are the remains of a group once known as 'The Blue and Buffs' because they were painted in those Whig colours to please the Prince of Wales. Nos 1 and 2 were demolished for road widening in 1928. (Carder T: The Encyclopaedia of Brighton: Lewes: 1990).
