Description

Numbers 9 and 10 are terraced houses built in 1786 and refronted in the early 19th century. They are constructed of stucco with tiled roofs, likely old tiles on No. 10. The buildings rise four storeys over a basement, with dormers in the attic of No. 9. The ground floor features banded rustication, with steps leading up to a round-arched entrance at No. 9. This entrance is framed by engaged Doric columns, topped with an entablature and an open pediment that has a dentil cornice. The entrance also includes panelled reveals, a fanlight with decorative glazing, and a panelled and studded door of original design. No. 10 has a similar entrance but is flat-arched with an overlight and no pediment.

Both houses have bracketed verandahs on the first floor, supported by ornate brackets and railings. The concave awning of intricate trellis work on No. 9 was designed by C.A. Busby between 1822 and 1830. The upper floors of both houses are broadly similar but have undergone alterations. No. 9 features second-floor windows with a central segmental pediment and triangular pediments on either side, with simplified architraves. The third floor has bracketed sills and floating cornices. No. 10 has sill bands on the second and third floors and simplified architraves. Both houses have a cornice and blocking course, with two dormers on No. 9 and stacks on the party walls.

The interior has not been inspected. There are cast-iron railings to the steps and area. Notably, No. 9 has a plaque commemorating Charles Talleyrand, who stayed there in 1831.
