Description

This is a lamp post located in front of numbers 1 and 2 St James's Place in Brighton. It was designed in the 1880s, possibly cast as late as 1930, and adapted for electric light in the late 19th century or early 20th century. The lamp post is made of cast iron and another metal. It features an octagonal, panelled base that supports an octagonal, tapering shaft, which is also panelled to match the base. The design includes a simple coved capital and a single maintenance arm. The lamp post is Tudor in style and has a timing mechanism above, marked BLEECO, which serves as a base for a swan-neck, tubular bracket that is braced by a metal fillet shaped like a tendril. It also has a shallow dish reflector.
