Description
This lamp post, located at the corner of Park Street and Eastern Road in Brighton, is a gas standard designed in the late 19th century, possibly cast as late as the early 20th century. It was converted to electric light in the late 19th century or early 20th century. Made of cast iron and another metal, it features a square base that chamfers to an octagonal shape, adorned with horizontal reeds. The tapering shaft is designed to resemble clustered columns and ends in a bell capital. It has a single maintenance arm in a Gothic Revival style. Above the arm is a timing mechanism marked BLEECO, which serves as a base for a swan-neck, tubular bracket, supported by a metal fillet shaped like a tendril. The lamp post also includes a shallow dish reflector.
