Description

This lamp post, located in front of numbers 43 and 45 on Great College Street in Brighton, is a gas standard designed in the 1880s, with possible casting as late as 1930. It has been adapted for electric light in the late 19th century or early 20th century. The lamp post is made of cast iron and another metal, featuring an octagonal, panelled base that supports an octagonal, tapering shaft, which is also panelled to match the base. It has a simple coved capital and a single maintenance arm. The design is Tudor in style, with a timing mechanism above marked BLEECO, which serves as a base for a swan-neck, tubular bracket that is braced by a metal fillet shaped like a tendril. Additionally, there is a shallow dish reflector.
