Description

This is a mid-to-late 19th century gas lamp standard, subsequently adapted for electric light in the late 19th or early 20th century. The lamp post is constructed of cast iron and another metal. It is in the form of a straight-sided, fluted, and tapering Tuscan column, featuring a single maintenance arm. At the top is a plain cylindrical impost over which sits a timing mechanism, marked BLEECO. This mechanism serves as a base for a swan-neck, tubular bracket, which is braced by a metal fillet shaped as a tendril. The lamp includes a shallow dish reflector. The lamp post is located in front of number 26, Great College Street, Brighton.
