Description
The lamp post in the south courtyard of Brighton College is one of a pair of gas standards that have been converted to electricity. It dates from the early to mid 19th century and is made of cast iron. The lamp post features an octagonal base, a tapering, twisted shaft, and a yoke maintenance arm positioned below a bell capital that is embossed with palmettes. It has a Windsor-type lamp of original design, which has been repaired, and the ventilator cap is from the late 20th century. This standard was relocated from another site to the main court of the College in the 20th century.
