Description
The building is a post office, constructed in 1887. It is built of stucco, with a roof hidden behind a parapet. The front of the building has two main floors above a basement. It has four window bays, with a central arcade of two bays supported by Tuscan pilasters. This arcade has two round-arched windows, their arch spandrels featuring inset panels edged with egg-and-dart moulding, and vermiculated keystones. To either side of the arcade, near the end walls, a single bay of the central design is repeated; one bay has a round-arched window, and the other provides an entrance, its tympanum being plainly panelled. Rusticated pilaster strips run up the corners of the building to the full height of the facade; a storey band is present between the ground and first floors. The central design is repeated on the first floor, but the arcades are blocked, and the Tuscan pilasters are omitted. The blocked windows have suborders, with their tympana filled with shell motifs. A plaque along the storey band displays the words "Kemp Town Post Office." A plain entablature band runs along the top of the building, featuring four pairs of console brackets centered on the bays below. Above this is a parapet that projects slightly to form piers, each topped with a ball finial. The interior was not inspected. There are railings to the area.
