Description
The gateway and attached wall leading to Portland Mews, located on St George's Road in Brighton, date from the early 19th century. Constructed of stucco, the entrance features a flat-arched opening with a broad architrave. A continuous dentil cornice runs along the top, stepping out to create a capital over quoin strips at each end. Above the entrance, there is a plain parapet with a recessed panel that displays the words "Portland Mews," flanked by short piers. Connecting these piers is a balustrade designed as a small arcade, which has been recently restored. This listing specifically pertains to the front wall, the gate, and its architectural features, including the end wall to No. 87 St George's Road, but does not include the buildings located just inside the gate. The gateway is part of a group that includes Nos 1-25 Portland Place and St George's Church.
