Description
This lamp post, located south of the Tower on Tower Road in Brighton, dates from the mid to late 19th century. Originally a gas standard, it was adapted for electric light in the late 19th or early 20th century. The post is made of cast iron and another metal, featuring a straight-sided design that resembles a fluted and tapering Tuscan column. It has a single maintenance arm and is topped with a plain cylindrical impost. Above this, there is a timing mechanism marked BLEECO, which serves as a base for a swan-neck tubular bracket, braced by a metal fillet shaped like a tendril. The lamp post also includes a shallow dish reflector.
