Description

The garden walls to the former Attree Villa, built around 1830, are located on the southwest side of Queen's Park Terrace in Brighton. These walls are constructed from split flints set in pebble mortar, with brick pilasters, coping, and piers, and stucco applied over the brick on the piers. The walls extend from the east corner with Tower Road to North Drive and are approximately 2 meters high, stepping down to one meter in several areas at the west end. They feature a slightly battered profile with brick pilasters placed every 3.5 meters and rounded brick coping at the top.

The walls are interrupted at various points: first, near the corner with North Drive by a pair of late 20th-century brick piers; opposite No. 17 Queen's Park Terrace, where there are a pair of c1830 brick piers that are faced in stucco and moulded; at the intersection with Barnfield Gardens, a new road created after the demolition of Barry's villa for a housing estate; and again opposite the chancel of St Luke's Church on Queen's Park Terrace.

The listing also includes the stucco-faced brick piers and cast-iron railings on the southwest side of Tower Road where it meets Queen's Park Road. However, the similar railings along North Drive are too damaged to be listed and are specifically excluded from this listing. The garden walls are included for their group value with the surrounding historical context.
