Description
This lamp post, located in front of Number 2 on St Luke's Road in Brighton, is a Grade II listed gas standard. It was designed in the 1880s, with the possibility of being cast as late as 1930, and was adapted for electric light in the late 19th century or early 20th century. The lamp post is made of cast iron and another metal. It features an octagonal, panelled base that supports an octagonal, tapering shaft, which is also panelled to match the base. At the top, there is a simple coved capital and a single maintenance arm. The design is Tudor in style. Above the arm is a timing mechanism marked BLEECO, which serves as the base for a swan-neck, tubular bracket that is braced by a metal fillet shaped like a tendril. The lamp post also includes a shallow dish reflector.
