Description

This lamp post, located opposite the Swimming Baths on St Luke's Terrace in Brighton, is a gas standard designed in the 1880s, possibly cast as late as 1930. It was adapted for electric light in the late 19th century or early 20th century. Made of cast iron and another metal, it features an octagonal, panelled base that supports an octagonal, tapering shaft, which is also panelled to match the base. The lamp has a simple coved capital and a single maintenance arm. Above this is a timing mechanism marked BLEECO, which serves as the base for a swan-neck, tubular bracket, braced by a metal fillet shaped like a tendril. It includes a shallow dish reflector.
