Lamp Post At The Corner With South Avenue

This lamp post, located at the corner of South Avenue and Freshfield Place in Brighton, was designed in the 1880s and may have been cast as late as 1930. Originally a gas standard, it was converted to electric light in the late 19th century or early 20th century. Made of cast iron and another metal, it features an octagonal, panelled base and a tapering octagonal shaft that matches the base. The lamp post has a simple coved capital and a single maintenance arm. It is designed in a Tudor style, with a timing mechanism or clock box above marked "BLEECO," which serves as a base for a swan-neck, tubular bracket. This bracket is supported by a metal fillet shaped like a tendril, and it includes a shallow dish reflector.
