Description

The Royal Spa, located in Brighton, is the ruin of the German Spa that was named "Royal" after receiving a royal warrant in 1835. It was constructed in 1825 by the architect Lorraine for Dr. FA Struve, who had previously opened spas in Berlin, Dresden, and Leipzig. Although the pump room closed in the 1850s, the building continued to be used for the manufacture and bottling of mineral water until 1965. The pump room was demolished in the early 1970s, leaving only the north wall and portico. The ruins were restored by TR Williams in 1978, coinciding with the construction of the Royal Spa Nursery School to the west. The building is designed in the Greek Revival style and features stucco.

The portico consists of six fluted Ionic columns standing on a paved terrace, with an entablature and parapet that rises to a crest over the center bay, which likely once displayed an inscription. There is a plain lintel between the portico and its responds, which are unfluted Ionic pilasters set on the former north wall. This wall has five round-arched openings with architraves; the end bays are doorways, while the center bays are windows with projecting sills and spandrels. The wall is slightly wider than the portico and extends to a left-rear corner, with the right side returning for only 2 meters. The former interior wall to the west features a recessed panel shaped like a Venetian window.
