BRIGHTON PARK HILL (North side) The Royal Spa
GV II
Ruins of the German Spa, called "Royal" after a royal warrant was obtained in 1835. Built in 1825 by the architect Lorraine for Dr. FA Struve, who had opened spas in Berlin, Dresden and Leipzig. Although the pump room was closed in the 1850s, the building was used for the manufacture and bottling of mineral water until 1965. The pump room demolished in the early 1970s except for the north wall and portico; ruins restored by TR Williams in 1978 when the Royal Spa Nursery School built to the west. Stucco. Greek Revival style. Portico of 6 fluted Ionic columns standing on a paved terrace; entablature and parapet which rises to crest over the centre bay and must once have born an inscription. Plain lintel between the portico and its responds, unfluted Ionic pilasters, which are set on the former north wall. 5 round-arched openings with architraves in this wall: the end bays are doorways; the centre are windows with projecting sills and spandrels. The wall is slightly wider than the portico, and returns to a left-rear corner; the right returns for only 2 metres. The former interior wall to the west has a recessed panel in the form of a Venetian window. (Carder T: The Encyclopaedia of Brighton: Lewes: 1990-: 138B).
