Description

The gate, dated 1890, was designed by the Borough Engineer and Surveyor, Francis J May, and is constructed from artificial stone. It is designed as a tripartite triumphal arch with three bays. The central passage is the tallest and widest, spanning the exit of West Drive into Egremont Place, while the identical side arches span the pavements into West Drive. Each round-arched opening has an architrave supported by a pair of Tuscan piers, with volute keystones. The spandrels of the central arch are decorated with garlanded swags, while the side arches have inset panels ornamented with Jacobean-style scrollwork and cartouches, reading "A.D." and "1890" respectively. The central arch features a modillioned projecting cornice and an attic frieze, bearing the inscription: "Gift of the Trustees of Brighton Race Stand. Alderman Henry Abbey. Alderman John L Brigden, JP. Alderman Ridley, JP and William Seymour Burrows, Esquire. To the inhabitants of Brighton. MDCCCXC". Above this is a moulded plaque inscribed "Queen’s Park", with gable cresting and volute brackets to the sides, topped by an urn. The tympanum of the pediment above each side arch is filled with a cartouche surrounded by floral scrolls, and the attic storey behind the pediment is topped by a conical finial cast in the form of a Byzanto-Romanesque reliquarium. Plain walls connect each arch, finished with moulded coping. A cobble wall extends to the east. Cast-iron railings extend to Queen’s Park Road and Park Hill. The gate is part of a group that includes the former Royal Spa in Park Hill and the Park Street Gate to the south.
