Description
Number 21 is a terraced house dating to around 1815, located in the Upper Rock Gardens, Brighton. The house is constructed of stucco and painted brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern, with the roof hidden by a blocking course. It is three storeys high with an attic, and sits above a half basement.
The house has a flat-arched entrance with an overlight, framed by Tuscan pilasters and an entablature that also acts as a storey band, separating the ground floor from the first. To the right of the entrance is a tripartite window featuring original sashes: 6x6 panes to the centre and 4x4 panes to the sides. The ground floor has banded rustication, while the upper floors are in brick. A balcony with a cast-iron railing is located on the first floor. The front elevation is treated as a full-height, nearly full-width segmental bay. Entablature storey bands are also present above the second floor and attic. All windows are flat-arched with architraves; those on the first floor extend from floor to ceiling and each has a pediment. The sashes feature original designs, with 6x9, 3x6, and 3x3 panes on the first, ground, and ground floors respectively. A stack is located within the party wall.
The interior remains uninspected. Original railings are present to the staircase and area. Number 21 forms a group with numbers 15, 17, 18, 20, and 26.
